Aside from the pouting giant, Augustana did manage to say the right college name, and Layus even threw in a “Go Spartans.” Augustana is one of those bands that doesn’t need to talk. And that’s a good thing. Layus’ voice is shockingly authentic, almost as if it’s tangible. When Chris Sachtleben accompanies on the mandolin, the end result is genuinely fantastic, as if Dave Matthews and Incubus decided to join forces.
Unlike most back-up vocals, Jared Palomar manages to obtain crowd feeling without being overbearing (see Big City Rock). His shoulder-length locks add to the effect but in a less irritating way than those ’80s hair bands.
